If you’re looking for a traditional Ryuso (Okinawan traditional clothing) experience in Central Okinawa, OKINAWA KIMONO家 offers an authentic cultural activity in a quiet local village in Kitanakagusuku.
Conveniently located near major U.S. military bases such as Camp Foster and Kadena Air Base, this experience is popular not only with visitors to Okinawa but also with many U.S. military families living on the island.
The studio is about 13 minutes from Chatan (American Village) and 10 minutes from AEON Mall Okinawa Rycom, making it an easy stop during a day out exploring central Okinawa.
What is a Ryuso Experience?
When people think of trying traditional clothing in Okinawa, many imagine tourist areas like Naha or Shuri.
However, in Central Okinawa, there are actually very few places where you can experience authentic Ryuso.
At OKINAWA KIMONO家, you can enjoy this experience in a quiet local village where people still live, rather than in a busy tourist district.
Ryuso is the traditional clothing of the Ryukyu Kingdom, worn historically in Okinawa.
These garments feature beautiful Bingata dye patterns and traditional Okinawan textiles, reflecting the island’s rich culture and history.
Ryuso may look similar to Japanese kimono, but there are many differences in colors, patterns, tailoring, and how the sash is tied, making it a unique cultural tradition of Okinawa.
At OKINAWA KIMONO家, the experience is not just about wearing the outfit.
We believe in creating a moment where guests can truly feel Okinawan culture.
You’ll get dressed in Ryuso inside a 50-year-old traditional Okinawan house, then take a walk through a peaceful local village. This allows you to experience Okinawan culture and daily life in a very personal way.
It’s a perfect activity for anyone who wants to enjoy a genuine Okinawan cultural experience during their stay on the island.
A Cultural Experience in a Real Okinawan Village
OKINAWA KIMONO家 is located in a quiet residential village in Kitanakagusuku Village, away from crowded tourist areas. The village still features many traditional elements of Okinawan life like Coral stone walls, Red-tile roofs, Shisa guardian statues at gates and homes and Seasonal flowers and plants throughout the neighborhood.
Walking through this village while wearing Ryuso becomes a truly special experience, where you can feel the history and atmosphere of Okinawan culture.
Many guests say it feels like stepping into a story, where for a moment you become part of Okinawa’s cultural landscape.
Our staff also act as guides, sharing stories about local life, traditions, and the plants and flowers found in the village.
