A Small Story About a Child and a Photo

A staff member recently shared a story about their child.
At PreK class, there was a Ryusou photo day, so the parent signed them up, thinking it would be a fun memory.
But when the day came, it didn’t quite go how they had imagined.
The color they wanted had already been picked by another child. They were handed a sanshin they didn’t feel like holding. And being surrounded by several unfamiliar photographers felt a bit overwhelming.
On top of that, they couldn’t quite find the words to say what they wanted or didn’t want in that moment.
The photo they received later was… a very serious one.
Not a bad photo, just a slightly stiff expression—the kind that makes you laugh a little when you look back on it now.
When I heard the story, it made me think that maybe what matters most isn’t how nicely a photo turns out, but whether the child actually enjoyed the experience.
At OKINAWA KIMONO家, we try to create a different kind of atmosphere.
Children can take their time choosing what they like. Families can take photos at their own pace. And for younger children, we offer a shorter 1-hour plan, so things can end while they’re still having fun.
Some time later, that same family came to visit us.
When they told their child,“We’re going to dress like a royal family from Okinawa,”they were immediately excited.
They chose their favorite outfit, tried wearing zori sandals for the first time, and enjoyed everything at their own pace.
Later, we heard that they kept talking about it at home.
Photos are important, of course.
But more than that, we hope to create moments that families can look back on and smile about later.
